A Comprehensive Guide to Double Glazed Window Styles

If you are planning to revamp for the interiors of your home, double glazed window designs are suitable options to consider for improving the appearance of your abode. A double-glazed window is made up of two parallel panes of glass windows (called the "thermal glass" or "insulated glass") with some space between them. This space ranges between 16 to 19 mm in width and is filled with inert gasses like xenon, krypton or argon that are poor conductors of heat, thereby, not allowing any transfer of energy from any sides of the house.

After filling the space with inert gasses, the unit is sealed. A drying agent is added to ensure that no moisture is present inside the finished glass unit, thereby, making the window airtight. If condensation appears inside the window, it indicates that there is a leak; but if condensation appears outside, you can be assured that the window is helpful in insulating your home perfectly.

In extreme climatic conditions, these double-glazed windows are designed to keep the home insulated and protected from the external cold winds, thereby, reducing the electricity bills. Though the installation is expensive, the cost-benefit analysis shows that the cost is easily recovered from a steady reduction in your electricity bills of about 10 to 12%.

These energy efficient windows provide insulation between the double panes of glass and make for great double glazed window designs in addition to acting as a shield from unpleasant outdoor temperatures.

The insulating value of the window is measured by the R value system that indicates the level of resistance a material offers in curbing energy transfer. The higher the value in the R system, the better is the double-glazed window design, thereby, offering greater resistance and insulation.

Sealed units, also, have a strip in between the panes that is made from metal or polymer called ‘Spacers’. They contain a drying agent that absorbs any moisture trapped in the space between the panes of glass in order to maintain the durability of the windows.

Various Types of External Frames Are Available Suiting to Different Budgets and Styles as Below:

  • PVC-U is durable, recyclable and offers performance longevity (usually 20 years or more). Also, they are recyclable.
  • Wooden frames are great insulators, environment-friendly and add an imperial look. But these are costlier as compared to other options available. Also, the maintenance costs are quite high as they may need repainting from 3 to 5 years.
  • Lightweight and durable, Aluminum frames are another option. These offer various other benefits like cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, contemporary look, fade resistant and good insulation. They are extremely low on maintenance and can be recycled too.  Compared to other options, these are cost-effective but do not boast of an equivalent insulation.
  • Double glazed window styles offer a variety of options to choose from, they range from pure white, wood-grain finish (usually more expensive options), white or brass handles.

Double glazing is friendly for the environment as well.  The cooking and air conditioning at homes cause around 28% of all carbon dioxide emissions, and these windows combat energy loss. These windows are very good at cutting down noise pollution, internal condensation, and electricity bills. The sealed window panes do not allow the sound waves to travel from inside or outside the house, reducing noise pollution.

Not just the noise pollution, these windows efficiently cut down the air pollution that tends to enter homes and in turn, keeps the internal environment fresh.

Now, a comfortable, calming and confidential home environment is just a step away with these effective double-glazed windows.
