The Pros And Cons Of LED Lighting: Know Before You Buy!

LED lights are most preferred in the lighting technology as it is energy efficient. LED means Light Emitting Diode, and is basically a semiconductor device that converts electricity into light. LED is super efficient in energy, and uses about 85% less energy than incandescent lighting or Halogen. You will realize this when you look at your electricity bills. The life of LED lights is longer than various other types of lighting that are available in the market.

Tips to choose the best LED downlight

There are plenty of choices when it comes to LED lights, and so it can be confusing to choose the right one. Mentioned below are some tips that will help you.
  • Check the Wattage: The wattage of the light is the key to energy saving. The wattage is reduced although the output remains the same. For example, a halogen downlight uses approximately 50-55 watts, but LED lights range from 4 to 14 watts.
  • Keep an eye on Lumens: The unit for measuring the quantity of light produced by a light source is called Lumen.  You need to make sure that the LED downlight you select has higher lumens as it can make the light brighter than the one that has lesser lumens. Lumens per watt will show LED efficiency of the light.  These would vary from each product depending on the chip they have used and how the product is being used.
  • Angle: The angle of the beam is an important factor to consider while choosing the LED lighting installation. The angle shows how well the light can spread from the source of the light. If the beam is narrow the light that is received would be concentrated.  If the beam is wide the light can be soft and general.
  • Temperature and Color: The temperature of a LED light is a scale linear to measuring the light color. Usually it is measured in degrees. If the number is low, then the light is warm and if the numbers are high then it is cool light. You can choose either of these according to your preference. In fact, it is better to go with cool light for areas like laundry and kitchen areas which are warmer than the other rooms. The lighting will make the room cooler. Warm light can make the atmosphere extremely intimate and cooler temperatures will thus make the whole atmosphere comfortable and relaxing. It is better to choose one color for the living room because if the colors are mixed, it would be distracting to the eye.
  • LED downlights that are Dimmable: Initially the LED downlight were not dimmable. Now after extensive research we can experience and enjoy an extensive range of dimmable LED downlight.  The compatibility testing was done to ensure that these dimmable products were compatible with other leading dimmers that were available in the market.  Some of the LED downlights come with a chip that can deliver a power supply from the transformer and dimmer combination to the LED.

Tips for Set-up for LED downlight

While setting up the LED dimming, make sure that there are a minimum of three downlights used on one dimmer, as some have a minimum wattage requirement of load. It is better to use two-way switching in rooms that have two exits in order to make sure lights can easily be switched off while leaving the room. This saves a lot of energy usage.

You can even swap to downlights for energy saving without waiting for the professional electrician. If you have a downlight with 12V, hold the lamp holder with one hand and pull the globe bulb out with your other hand.  If you have a downlight with 240V hold the lamp holder with one hand and then turn the globe bulb in an anti-clockwise direction.
