The Concept of Furnishing the Exterior

You use various kind of decorative items to design interior of your home. Not only show pieces, but expensive, well designed furniture adds to the glow. But, what about the exterior part?? Suppose you have a big lawn, or a swimming pool, you cannot afford to keep them devoid of any furniture. Not just to beautify them, but you need to have provisions to use the space. The concept of furnishing the exterior goes back thousands of years. During the medieval ages and even before that, elites and wealthy class had their outside well furnished. This tradition still continues, not only because it is a symbol of class and wealth but also it has some utility.

  • Accessories - Garden accessories include items like plant stands, birdbaths, trellises, planter boxes which add details to outside area.

A wooden garden furnishing needs to be treated periodically, as they suffer through exposure to sun and rain. A commonly used material for outdoor stuff is Teak. Teak naturally contains silica; as a result fungal decay could be prevented. Silica also protects from water and chemicals. It also protects against fire, alkali and acid. Certain oil, which when applied on teak to help it resist weather and other effects.

Most durable and long-lasting material used to build outdoor fittings is aluminum. As far as aluminum is concerned, it is very important to maintain protective coating. Plastic equipment is also used frequently as they come cheap and are naturally waterproof, and hence could be left out for years.


Outdoor furniture was originally made from palm trees, found in tropical regions. These days, synthetic resin materials, have increased their life expectancy and reduced manufacturing cost to a great extent.
