The Basic Steps Involved In Brake Repairs

  1. Use the jack provided by the car to lift the vehicle by providing proper restrictions on the other three tires so that it doesn't start to roll out.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel using spanner type of device provided by the car. After the removal of lug nuts, remove the wheels. With this, you will be able to see the brake assembly and reach it.
  3. Then you need to figure out slider bolts (or pins) that embed the caliper in place. By removing the lower bolt, the whole system will slide out.
  4. After the removal of lower bolts, the caliper pivots up. Do not disconnect any hydraulic line in this whole process.
  5. After proper opening, it will now be easy to check the thickness of brakes. Metal indicators are provided to the brakes that squeak when they touch the rotor part. It is also good to check if the thickness of the pad has lessened or not even if the metal indicator is not visible due to the wear and tear.
  6. Now as the brake pads are open, you can easily take the old pads out.
  7. Since the new brake pads come with brand new clips for easy sliding of the new brakes inside the clip, so you need to put the clips and then slide the new brake pads inside the clips. Grease is also needed to be applied.
  8. The new brake pad will easily go inside the clips and in case it is little bit tighter then you’ll need to apply grease.
  9. Pistons press the brake pads and then they squeeze the rotor to stop. So before lowering the caliper, you need to push back the piston so that it will clear new brake pads.
  10. You can easily push it back by yourself. By taking plywood covering both the pistons and C-clamp, you will be able to do that. Maximum cars have one piston per caliper, but if a car has two pistons then you need push back both the pistons at single moment. By using C-clamp, you must slowly insert the brake fluid of the piston into the main cylinder reservoir through tiny passages.
  11. As you gradually push the piston back, you must take good care of the brake fluid level by opening the main reservoir. When you work on second brake fluid, both brake fluid combine together and starts to overflow which is not good. You can take out the excess fluid by using turkey baster. The fluid will gradually decrease when it is in use and again the level will go up when there will be a replacement of the old brakes. This process goes on.
  12. After the proper completion of above process in brake repair, the caliper should slide easily over the pads without much effort. Sometimes, with the new brake pads it might get bit tight but eventually it will slide up.
  13.  Now you need to tighten the slide bolts (or pins) and then attach the wheels properly and tighten the lug nuts.
  14. Take a proper test drive in safe conditions before landing yourself into the main streets after brake repair.
